Basic strategy is the set of decisions that gives you the best chance at blackjack over time. It won’t beat the house, but on standard rules it cuts the casino’s edge to around 0.5%. Here are the key rules in plain English.

1The core rules

  • Hard 17 or more: always stand.
  • Hard 13 to 16: stand if the dealer shows 2 to 6; hit against 7 or higher.
  • Hard 12: stand against 4, 5 or 6; otherwise hit.
  • 11: double against everything except an ace (on most UK multi-deck tables).
  • 10: double against 2 to 9.
  • 9: double against 3 to 6.

2Splitting pairs

  • Always split aces and 8s.
  • Never split 10s or 5s.
  • Split 2s, 3s and 7s against 2 to 7.
  • Split 6s against 2 to 6, and 4s only against 5 or 6.
  • Split 9s against 2 to 9, except 7.

3Soft hands

A soft hand includes an ace counted as 11. Stand on soft 19 or more. Soft 18 stands against 2, 7 and 8, doubles against 3 to 6 where allowed, and hits against 9, 10 and ace. Lower soft hands usually hit, or double against the dealer’s weakest cards.

4Use a chart

It’s easier to follow a chart than to memorise every rule. Casino Compare has a free blackjack strategy calculator and chart that adjusts for different table rules.

5Bonuses and blackjack

Most casino bonuses count blackjack at 10% or less towards wagering, or exclude it entirely. Check the game contribution before you play a bonus on blackjack.

Before you play, read how wagering requirements work and compare current casino offers.
