About this video: Progressive jackpot slots explained
We watch a progressive jackpot slot as the meter grows with every spin. Then we look at the four jackpot tiers (Mini, Minor, Major and Mega), at network jackpots shared by many casinos, and at a must-drop jackpot paying out before its £10,000 limit.
It also shows the catch. In our example, 2% of a 96% RTP goes into the jackpot, so ordinary spins return about 94%. The chance of the top prize on any spin is often less than one in a million, which is why we suggest treating it like a lottery ticket.

Let’s see how progressive jackpot slots work, with a live example.
This is a progressive jackpot slot. Up at the top is the jackpot meter, so keep an eye on it. Every time someone spins, a small slice of their stake goes into the jackpot, which is why it keeps on growing.
Lots of games have several jackpots. The mini and minor ones are small and land quite often. The major and mega ones are big, and rare.
With a network jackpot, players at lots of different casinos all feed the same pot. That’s how some jackpots reach millions.
A must-drop jackpot has to pay out before a set time, or before it reaches a set amount. This one must drop before ten thousand pounds, and there it goes.
Now here’s the catch. The money for the jackpot comes out of the normal game. This slot says ninety-six percent RTP, but two percent of that goes into the jackpot, so ordinary spins only pay back about ninety-four percent.
Somebody does win the top prize, but the chance on any single spin is tiny, often less than one in a million. So it’s best to treat it like a lottery ticket.
So, three simple tips. Check the base RTP, not just the headline figure. Read the jackpot rules on stakes and bonus funds. And never raise your stake beyond your budget to chase it. To see how RTP and volatility play out, try our free simulator.
