The Gambler’s Fallacy and Other Casino Myths Debunked

Many casino beliefs feel like common sense: a slot that hasn’t paid out must be due, a colour that keeps winning must be hot. They’re wrong, and believing them can cost you money.

Here are the most common casino myths and what’s really going on.

Video: The gambler’s fallacy and casino myths (1 minute 34 seconds, with voiceover).

1The gambler’s fallacy

The gambler’s fallacy is the belief that past results change the odds of the next one. If red has come up eight times in a row on roulette, it feels like black is due.

It isn’t. The wheel has no memory. On European roulette, the chance of black is 18 in 37 on every spin, whatever happened before. Long streaks look strange, but over thousands of spins they’re bound to happen.

2Myth: a slot is “due” to pay

Online slots use a random number generator (RNG). Each spin is independent, so a game that hasn’t paid a big win for hours is no more likely to pay one now. UK-licensed games are independently tested to check the RNG and the RTP.

The RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins, not a promise that the game will “catch up” in your session.

3Myth: hot and cold games

A game that just paid out isn’t “hot”, and one that hasn’t isn’t “cold”. Short-term results are just randomness. Switching games because of a streak doesn’t change your odds either way.

4Myth: the casino tightens a game when you’re winning

Licensed UK casinos can’t change a game’s odds based on how you’re doing. Some slots come in several RTP versions, set when the casino adds the game, which is why the same title can have a different RTP at different sites. Check the game’s info screen, and see our guide to RTP and volatility.

5Myth: near misses mean you were close

Two jackpot symbols and a third just above the line feels like a near win. But it’s just one random result among many. It doesn’t mean a win is coming next.

6Myth: a betting system can beat the odds

Doubling after a loss, or following a pattern, can change how your wins and losses arrive, but not the house edge. Every bet still has the same expected cost. Our guide to betting systems shows why.

  • Set a budget and a time limit, and stop when you reach either one.
  • Don’t chase losses. Thinking you’re “due” a win is a warning sign.
