About this video: The gambler’s fallacy and casino myths

We play a real roulette table with one chip on red. The ball lands on 21, a red win, and many players would now think black is due. Then we spin again to show that the wheel has no memory: black has the same 18 in 37 chance on every spin, and it lands on red again. The same goes for slots. A game that hasn’t paid a bonus in 200 spins is not “due”.

We also look at a near miss on the reels, a run of 60 random spins full of natural streaks, and why doubling your stake after a loss can’t beat the house edge.

Let’s look at the gambler’s fallacy, with a real roulette game.

We’ve got one chip on red, and the ball lands on twenty-one. Red, so we win. Lots of players would now think black must be due.

But the wheel has no memory. On the next spin, black has exactly the same chance as always, eighteen in thirty-seven. And here, it’s red again.

Slots work in just the same way. Every spin is random, and separate from the last one. This slot hasn’t paid a bonus in two hundred spins, but that doesn’t make it due. The next spin has exactly the same chance as the first.

Near misses feel really close. Two jackpot symbols on the line, and one just above it. But a near miss means nothing at all, because the result was decided the moment you pressed spin.

Hot and cold streaks are just patterns we spot in random results. They can’t tell you what happens next.

And betting systems, like doubling your stake after a loss, can’t beat the house edge. They change when you win and lose, but not how much you lose on average.

So, three simple tips. Treat every spin as a fresh start, ignore the results board, and never chase your losses. Our free RTP and volatility simulator shows how random results really look.
